We provide speech therapy evaluation and treatment for children with a variety of speech and language needs, including but not limited to:
receptive and expressive language delays
articulation and phonology concerns
voice impairments
fluency concerns
oral motor deficits as it relates to feeding and speech
Evaluation
Evaluation is the first step for determining speech and language concerns. Evaluation allows a plan to be developed based on the child’s needs and caregiver’s concerns. During the first visit we will:
gather medical and developmental history as it relates to the needs and concerns of the client
gather information about the caregiver’s concerns and identify and discuss the goals they would like to achieve
observe the client in his/her natural environment, including the client's interaction with household members
formally evaluate receptive and expressive language functioning
evaluate the client’s articulation skills
identify and evaluate any additional areas indicated:
1. oral motor skills related to speech and feeding
2. fluency of speech
3. voice concerns
determine any assistive technology needs such as the need for an augmentative communication device
make suggestions for referrals regarding the client’s speech and language concerns
Treatment
Once the evaluation is completed we will develop a treatment plan that builds on the client’s strengths to achieve quality outcomes. A plan of care may include:
building rapport with each client to enhance cooperation and participation of the client
activities to target the areas of identified concern and need:
1. language activities to improve receptive and expressive language skills
2. oral motor exercises to support and strengthen articulation and feeding
skills
3. articulation therapy to remediate sound errors and improve intelligibility
of speech
4. fluency therapy for a client with stuttering concerns
5. voice therapy with a written prescription from a doctor to indicate specific voice
concern to be addressed
develop a home program to be utilized by the caregiver with the client to support the his/her needs
provide support for school and other activities related to speech and language functioning
monitor client’s plan of care to assess the need to develop new goals or change current goals
update the plan of care for the caregiver
monitor overall progress and periodically update evaluation information
